WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Please consider coming to the beautiful Oregon Coast in Aug 2013, to experience everything from the magnificent cliffs, which drop hundreds of feet into the blue Pacific Ocean to the small fishing villages with quant buildings with the nautical feeling, found only here on the NW Pacific coast. We will combine lots of in the field, hands on instruction along with review and photographic development sessions that will you’re your photography to the next level, as well as produce some
Astounding images
The Oregon coastline offers the photographer some of them most beautiful and famous marine views anywhere in the world. This diverse landscape ranges from sandy beaches with 500-600 high cliffs dropping off on rocky beaches with crashing waves, to tide pools filled with marine life. Many working lighthouses offer unique photographical experiences. Many small fishing towns offer beautiful harbors with easy access to fishing boats to capture the essence of life on the Oregon Coast.
Specific locations have been determined by years of experience. We’ll visit some of the well known, iconic places, as well as many places off the beaten path.
If you are a serious photographer, this is one location you’ll not want to miss.
The Oregon Coast workshops are fast becoming perhaps my most anticipated. The Oregon Coast contains some of the most varied, unique areas. Because of its remote beaches and tide pools, rocky coastline with majestic sea stacks and dramatic sunsets, this area offers great and different photographical experiences at every turn.
This 5 day workshop will not only get you to one of the greatest scenic locations, but serve as an enjoyable instructional period. Not only will we be photographing the vistas, tide pools, quaint fishing villages, lighthouses and coastal themes (along with some great sunsets!), we’ll enjoy the cool fresh and invigorating air of the pacific coast. There’s nothing like the Oregon Coast!
The majority of instruction and nature photography tips and techniques will take place right there in the field. There’s no need to take notes. After the workshop you’ll receive a complete 50+ (and growing) page syllabus containing everything we do in the field and more.
We take time in the evenings and periodically during the day to review our images in informal critique sessions. Special presentations concerning nature photography will also be made during these sessions.
My workshops are sponsored by NIK SOFTWARE, Photograph America Newsletter, Think Tank Photo Bags, Singh-Ray filters, Nodal Ninja,Lensbaby , Hunt’s Photo and Video and the Really Right Stuff. Discounts and some freebies are included in your workshop “pack” that you’ll receive upon arrival.
We will conduct special sessions to discuss information on photographing in the area, critique sessions of your work shot during the workshop as well as general photography information. As with all our workshops, this is primarily a field workshop. We do not sit in a classroom during the daytime. We are out shooting & learning about photography in the field, not behind a desk. However, it is critical as well as being very informative, to take time to review your work, and discuss important aspects of making quality photographs
We will spend time photographing all of this and more during our full 5 days on the coast. We will begin in Ecola State Park, where old growth rain forests abound. Views of the ocean and Tillamook Lighthouse make this area a must. From there we head down the coast to Cannon Beach, known for Haystack Rock and fabulous sunsets. The town of Tillamook is a bit further south (know for Tillamook Cheese!).
We will parallel the coast, often not driving on HWY 101 to shoot locations like Cape Lookout, Cape Mears, Devils Punchbowl, Cape Fowl weather, Haceta Head, Yaquina Head, Newport Harbor, Charleston Harboe,Cape Blanco, and more great locations ( with great names!). Itineries will be customized to light and weather conditions. We will shoot the many lighthouses that still even today, serves aids to mariners. We will spend evenings in, Tillamook, Newport, Florence, and Charleston, near Coos Bay.
This workshop will not only get you to great sonic locations, but serve as an instructional period. This location offers many challenges.
Not only will we be shooting the vistas, lighthouses etc, but we will be shooting some of the pristine landscapes as well as the close up world found in the many tide pools along the coast.
Sunrises and sunsets can be amazing. We will get you to the right locations, at the right time of day and make the best use of the week on the coast. Days are long, as sunsets can provide great afterglow until 10pm if conditions are good!
TIDE POOLS: We will spend some time photographing in some of the Tide Pools on the coast. These areas, though challenging to photograph offer some of the most interesting photography available anywhere. These summer months offer some of the lowest tides of the year and we’ll take advantage of them to get some interest images of the sea creatures that are readably available sometimes at arms length. I suggest reading this article about photographing in tide pools. Though we’ll go over this information during our workshop, it would serve you well to be prepared prior to getting here.
Daily itineraries, as well as weather information, what to bring and more will be sent 2 weeks before the workshop. The area we will cover will range from Ecola State Park on the Northern Oregon Coast, to Bandon, on the Southern Oregon Coast.
Lot’s of personal attention and guidance is provided as far as lodging and travel goes. Once you decide to attend a workshop, I typically call you to go over details with each attendee.
LOCATION / HOTEL INFO
We will spend evenings in Tillamook (Day 1), Newport (Day2), Florence (Day 3), and in Coos Bay (day 4). The evening of Day 5 you will be on your own and may want to travel back to Portland or stay longer on the coast. I can provide information on where to stay and more things to do in this wonderful and breathtaking area.
I’ll also let you know where I stay in each town, as well as other accommodations in case you prefer somewhere else. I am very familiar with the Oregon Coast and can guide you to a nice hotel/ motel. The motels I stay in are ones I have stayed in for many years and as happy with.
TRAVEL INFORMATION
BY AIR:
Arrive -PORTLAND OREGON. Since we will be heading out to the coast from the Portland area out to Ecola State Park very early on Day 1, please arrive into Portland prior to Day1.We will shoot all day on day 5 as well so plan accordingly. note lodging information above—I do NOT arrange hotels on the night of DAY 5.) We will arrange a point of departure, usually at a hotel near the airport, as it’s typical that attendees com in a day ahead and stay near the airport the night prior to departure for the coast on day 1.
FOOD/DINING
There are many places to stop along the coast to snack, and eat. However, we are here to photograph and often the best light is at breakfast and dinner. Please know this in advance.
WEATHER
Weather on the coast can be very different from Portland. I will keep you updated before the workshop via email or telephone as to what I think the weather will be. Foggy, rainy weather can be just as wonderful for photographers as sun on the coast. In other words, it’s all good! Daytime highs can average in the high 60’s-mid 70’s and evenings in the low 50’s. However it is summer and if we get an offshore flow, temps can reach the 80’s, however rare. Some drizzle may occur, but rain is very rare in the summer
This is a trip you won’t forget!
