WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Please consider coming to the beautiful Eastern Sierra in October 2013, to experience the majesty of the fall color and the astonishing landscape of the area. In February. We will combine lots of in the field, hands on instruction along with review and photographic development sessions that will you’re your photography to the next level, as well as produce some astounding images.
Once again I’ll be teaming with my good friend and photographer extraordinaire Guy Tal,
http://guytal.com/gtp/index.jsp to bring you the best in workshop experience. Guy’s work and writings are a constant inspiration. We had a great group in 2011 ( and I expect the same in 2012!) and really worked together to bring new vision to our attendee’s images and knowledge. We both look forward to October 2013!
This will be my 18th year conducting my workshop in this location, at the very same time. Specific locations have been determined by years of experience. We’ll visit some of the well-known, iconic places, as well as many places off the beaten path.
If you are a serious photographer, this is one location you’ll not want to miss.
Registration forms and discounts are found at the end of this information sheet.
The Eastern Sierra Photo workshop is certainly my favorite. If I had one place to photograph it would be here. The Eastern Sierra contains some of the most beautiful, unique areas, literally in the world. Because of its remote location, this area is not visited like many of out National Parks, thus offering great photographical experiences
This 3 ½ day workshop will not only get you to one of the greatest scenic locations, but serve as an enjoyable instructional period. Not only will we be photographing the vistas, rock formations of the Alabama Hills, Mono Lake and the White Mountains, we’ll explore the ghost town, Bodied just north of Lee Vining and the oldest living species on the planet, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine’s in the White Mountains east of Bishop. In addition, some special remote locations are on the itinerary featuring some of the beautiful Mt/ Streams and aspen groves, sure to be in full grandeur when we arrive. This time of the year it the prime time for fall color. Glowing aspens reflecting in sub-alpine lakes are plentiful. There’s nothing like fall in the Eastern Sierra!
The majority of instruction and nature photography tips and techniques will take place right there in the field. There’s no need to take notes. After the workshop you’ll receive a complete 50+-page syllabus containing everything we do in the field and more.
We take time in the evenings and periodically during the day to review our images in informal critique sessions. Special presentations concerning nature photography will also be made during these sessions.
My workshops are sponsored by NIK SOFTWARE, Photograph America Newsletter, Think Tank Photo Bags, Lensbaby , Hunt’s Photo and Video and the Really Right Stuff. Discounts and some freebies are included in your workshop “pack” that you’ll receive upon arrival.
Evenings will consist of informal sessions to discuss information on photographing in the area, critique sessions of your work shot during the workshop as well as general photography information.
As with all our workshops, this is primarily a field workshop. We do not sit in a classroom during the daytime. We are out shooting & learning about photography in the field, not behind a desk. However, it is critical as well as being very informative, to take time to review your work, and discuss important aspects of making quality photographs
Mono Lake
Just 15 minutes from Lee Vining Lies Mono Lake, the third oldest lake in the world with its tufa, forming some of the most the surreal landscapes anywhere. You have all see images made at Mono Lake. Yes, it is everything and more. We will spend 2 mornings and a sunset there to insure we get the best sunrise images possible. I’ve been to Mono Lake over 50 times and will get you to the spots for the best images possible, making use of the light and weather conditions.
Lundy Lake/ Lundy Canyon
Just north of Lee Vining is Lundy canyon. Lundy Canyon offers some of the greatest fall color available. There is lots of water back in there as well. Lundy creek flows from Lundy Lake. The creek then flows into a beaver pond lines with aspens and tress harvested by the beavers.
Bodie
Once again this year, we will visit the Ghost Town, Bodie is located high in the mountains (about 9000’) north of Mono Lake. Bodie was one a booming mining town that went bust. Today it’s a genuine ghost town that is in very good shape and offers endless photographic possibilities. It is maintained by the State Parks of California. I encourage you to read some of the history of the wild times when Bodie was in its glory (Bodie was once the largest town in California.
Landscape photography as well as close-up, intimate images of an old mining town, left to decay is everywhere!
We will shoot a sunrise at North Lake, and then explore some pre-scouted locations feathering fall color, and some of the local streams that are at peak color this time of year.
After lunch on Saturday, and have a quick visit to the Mountain Light Gallery
ALABAMA HILLS
Weathered rock formations over 150-200 million years old are the main feature of this area. Potato-shaped large boulders, many of which stand on end make for some of the most interesting photography anywhere.
There are quite a few natural arches which are the main attractions at the Alabama Hills. We will access some of these by short hikes from the Whitney Portal Road, Buttermilk Road, the old Movie Flat Road or the Horseshoe Meadows Road.
The Alabama Hills are a popular location for television and movie productions Since the early 1920s, 150 movies and about a dozen television shows have been filmed here, including: Tom Mix Films, Hop along Cassidy, The Gene Autry Show, The Lone Ranger, Gunga-Dine, How the West Was Won, A scene from Gladiator was also filmed here as well as other recent scenes.
Mt Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states towers over the Alabama Hills
Weather permitting we will try & get out for some night photography as well

WHAT WILL WE BE WORKING ON?
We will take our time, and look for the inner beauty to capture in our photography. We’ll use the combination of water and the amazing plants to create some wonderful images. Patterns and foregrounds are the order of the day. We will stress simplicity and use all aspects, including Depth of Field, proper exposure and more to improve your overall photography as well as come away with some wonderful images in excellent venues.
